Praying for your children.

Nobody has to be persuaded to pray for their children. The hard part is praying for them for years without either giving up or turning prayer into a nightly anxiety ritual.

Pray for character before circumstances.

Most parents pray for safety, grades, and health — all good things. But the prayers that shape a life are for wisdom, honesty, courage, kindness, and a soft heart toward God. Ask for both. Just do not let the second list disappear because the first one is louder.

Pray in the room while they sleep.

Standing in a doorway and praying quietly over a sleeping child does something a list on a phone cannot. If they are grown and gone, stand in the room they used to sleep in, or hold a photograph. Physical presence focuses prayer.

When they are older and gone.

Luke 15 is the parable people reach for, and rightly. But notice what the father actually does. He does not pursue, lecture, or send messages. He watches the road, and he is ready. Much of praying for an adult child is learning to keep the door open and the pressure off — the phone call that has no agenda, the birthday text with nothing attached.

Pray about your own fear.

A lot of prayer for children is fear wearing religious clothes. It sounds like intercession, but it is really rehearsing disasters in God’s presence. When you notice that, stop and hand over the fear itself before you go back to praying for the child.

A thirty-day pattern that works

  1. Pick one child and one thing. Write it on a card with the date.
  2. Pray it in their room or with their photo, out loud, once a day.
  3. On the days you feel nothing, pray it anyway and say so honestly.
  4. On day thirty, write what changed — in them, or in you. Both count.

A prayer you can pray tonight

Father, You love this child more than I do, which is very hard for me to believe at eleven at night. I bring them by name. I ask for the things I usually ask for — safety, health, provision — and then I ask for the things that matter longer: honesty, courage, a soft heart, and a real encounter with You that is not secondhand from me. Where they are far, keep the door open on my side. Take my fear; it is not helping either of us. Amen.
