Front 8 — The Weight
Praying over money and work.
Let us be honest about what this page will not do. It will not tell you that enough faith produces a bigger number. That teaching has damaged a lot of people, and it is not what Jesus said.
Ask plainly. Daily is a short horizon.
Give us today our daily bread. Not this quarter’s bread, not a cushion, not security — today’s. That is a deliberately small ask, and it is the one Jesus taught. Being specific is not being greedy. Say the actual number out loud.
Then ask for your grip to loosen.
This is the harder prayer and the one that changes the nights. Ask that this amount would stop being the thing that decides whether you are all right. Some of the most peaceful people in Scripture were short of money and were not being punished for it.
Worry is not work, even though it feels like it.
Jesus asks which of you by worrying can add a single hour. It generates all the physical sensations of labour — the tight chest, the running numbers, the sleeplessness — and builds nothing. Naming that is not a rebuke. It is permission to stop at midnight.
Do the daylight work.
The budget. The phone call to the creditor. The application you have not finished. The honest conversation with your spouse about where you actually are. Prayer is not a substitute for the phone call — it is what makes you able to make it.
This week
- Say the number out loud to God, exactly, instead of carrying it as fog.
- Ask for today, not for the whole year. Do that again tomorrow.
- Write one card: the specific need and the date. Watch what happens over ninety days.
- Make one call you have been avoiding — creditor, employer, or family — this week.
- Give something small away while you are short. It is a strange instruction and it consistently loosens the grip.
A prayer you can pray tonight
Father, here is the number, said out loud: [say it]. I ask plainly, because You told me to ask for bread one day at a time. Now the harder request: loosen my grip. Do not let this amount decide whether I am all right, and do not let me measure Your love by my balance. Give me courage for the calls I have been avoiding, and give me enough for today. Amen.
